Hospital Expansion Commissioning

The Challenge

A large hospital network planned a significant renovation/expansion to an existing hospital facility located on the south side of Indianapolis. The project included an all new power plant, a new surgery suite, and a six floor patient tower to be phased in around the existing operational facility. The project design adopted energy efficient solutions including heat/energy recovery systems and economizer mode HVAC units.

The Solution

As one of Performance Validation’s first non-pharma building commissioning project, PV was able to leverage knowledge and experience from the highly regulated life science industry and, in utilizing standardized templates from the Building Commissioning Association (BCA), work with the design-build contractors to deliver a complete commissioning solution for the facility.

The Results

The end result was a facility that was verified and documented to be installed and function per design/construction specifications with minimal impact to existing building operations. The existing hospital and new surgery suite was first turned over to the new power plant, followed by the occupation of the new patient tower with state-of-the-art accommodations in health care.

The Benefits

The project accomplished the following for the hospital renovation/expansion project:

  • Increased reliability, life expectancy, and operational efficiency while reducing operational costs of critical building systems including HVAC, steam, hot water, and chilled water equipment utilizing economizer modes, heat recovery systems, and programmed operational schedules to meet hospital demands.
  • Expanded patient capacity and improved accommodations with the new six floor patient tower.
  • Expanded surgery capacity and improved doctor accommodations with the new surgery suite.
